Too Good For Your Own Good

Editor: EthineShamba

"Too Good for Your Own Good"

These words have been echoing in my mind lately—"too good for your own good." What does that even mean? To be so dependable, so kind, so giving… that it starts to work against you.

Sometimes, it feels like being too good comes with an invisible price tag. More is asked of you—your time, your energy, your creativity—yet the recognition, the reward, or even just the thank you rarely matches the effort. It can be disheartening.

But then I ask myself: how does one ever reach their full potential without an unwavering commitment to excellence? Isn’t the pursuit of being good—great, even—at what we do the very thing that drives growth and impact?

The tricky part is learning to navigate the balance:

When do you say no?

When is it okay to pull back without feeling like you're sabotaging your own progress?

How do you protect your peace without shutting out possibilities that might just change your life?

These are not easy questions. Because the line between being a good person and being taken advantage of is a thin one. Sometimes, almost invisible.

I’m learning that boundaries are not barriers—they’re filters. They help sift what’s meant for you from what drains you. And intuition? That quiet voice inside? It’s often wiser than we give it credit for.

So maybe the challenge isn’t being too good. Maybe it’s learning how to be good to others without forgetting to be good to yourself.
